b. A Puritan who founded the colony of Massachusetts Bay

John Winthrop was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was also governor of the colony at various times. He served a number of non-consecutive terms between 1629 and 1649. He is perhaps best known for delivering his “city upon a hill” sermon to fellow Puritans where he described his vision for the colony’s future.
