King James II had two daughters, both Protestant. Later, his wife gave birth to a son and, since King James himself was a Catholic, Protestants were afraid that the son’s (heir’s) birth would lead to a long line of Catholic monarchs. They weren’t cool with this, so they staged a bloodless revolution that ended with the Dutch William of Orange and his wife, James II’s daughter Mary (a Protestant), taking over.
